Top 10 Tips to Navigate Your Study Abroad Semester

Now that I’ve been home for a while and have had time to reflect on my semester abroad, I can say I’ve learned a lot. Some things I did really well, and other things...well, let’s just say if I could go back and tweak a things I would. Studying abroad is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in college, but it definitely helps to have a few tips in your back pocket before you go.

To help future study abroad students (or my future self if I go again!), here are my top 10 tips to make the most of your study abroad semester.

1. Don’t Overpack.

Trust me on this one. I definitely brought too much stuff to Spain, clothes, shoes, accessories, and way too many “just in case” items. As someone who loves clothes and cute little trinkets, I thought I needed it all. Spoiler alert, I didn’t. Pack the basics, comfortable layers for both warm and cold weather, and leave room for the amazing things you’ll buy abroad. Clothes and everyday items are usually cheaper locally (especially compared to Hawaii!), and it’s way more fun shopping once you’re there.

2. Learn the Basics of the Local Language.

I hadn’t originally planned to study in Spain, so I had very little Spanish under my belt when I arrived. Having grown up learning Asian languages, the Latin roots were completely new to me and made everyday interactions a bit intimidating at first. If you’re headed to a country where you don’t speak the language, take some time before you leave to learn a few basic phrases and cultural customs. Trust me, being able to order food or ask for directions goes a long way in making you feel confident and connected.

3. Bring Some Comfort Snacks from Home.

One thing I really missed? Asian and spicy foods. While I loved indulging in tapas and Spanish pastries, after a few weeks I was craving my favorite foods and snacks from home. So bring a stash of your comfort snacks, you’ll thank yourself later when you need a little taste of home. It’s also a fun way to share your culture with new friends abroad!

4. Get an International Credit Card.

This is a game changer. I got a credit card with no foreign transaction fees and started earning points every time I made a purchase. Not only did it help me avoid extra charges, but by the end of the semester, I had racked up enough travel points to help offset some of my flight costs. Look for cards with student perks or travel rewards, they’re worth it.

5. Put Yourself Out There.

One of the best things you can do while studying abroad is say yes more often. Go to group outings, chat with classmates, join events, and explore your city, even if it’s outside your comfort zone. I met some of my closest friends this way and made memories I’ll cherish forever.

6. Take Weekend Trips, But Don’t Overdo It.

It’s tempting to travel every weekend to a new city or country, but don’t forget to enjoy the place you’re actually living in. I found some of my favorite cafés, parks, and spots in Sevilla simply by staying put and exploring on my own. Balance big trips with slow weekends, you’ll appreciate both more that way.

7. Document Your Experience.

Whether it’s a blog, journal, or photo diary, try to document your semester. Time moves fast and you’ll be glad you captured the little moments. I love looking back at the photos and blogs I made, they help me relive everything, even the small, silly memories that might’ve faded otherwise.

8. Be Flexible and Open Minded.

Things won’t always go as planned. Trains get delayed, plans change, and cultural differences can be surprising. The sooner you embrace the unknown, the more enjoyable your experience will be. Some of my favorite memories came from spontaneous changes or unexpected challenges that popped up along the way.

9. Stay in Touch with People (Near and Far).

Make time to connect with the people around you and those back home. Call your family, FaceTime friends, and keep a healthy balance of old and new relationships. The support from home helped ground me, while the new friendships abroad expanded my world.

10. Savor the Last Moments.

When finals are over and the bags are (mostly) packed, take time to walk your city one last time. Visit your favorite cafe, stroll through a park, or sit at a lookout point and reflect. I did a sunset picnic in María Luisa Park with my friend on my last night, and it made saying goodbye to Sevilla all the more special. Soak it all in, you won’t regret it.

Studying abroad changed my life in ways I never expected. I discovered new passions, challenged myself in new environments, and made lifelong friendships. Whether you’re just starting to plan or already on your way, I hope these tips help you navigate your journey a little smoother.

Your adventure is out there, go make the most of it!
